MAP Learning Progressions and Student Status
Learning Progressions
Learning progressions outline the scales, range, etudes, solos, and other areas of performance and technique which students strive to master during their enrollment in MAP. Faculty identify the student's relative level at the start of each year. Student goals, recital repertoire, and year-end evaluation selections should be shaped with these progressions in mind.

Student Status
All MAP students begin their enrollment in good standing. If a student should receive an unsatisfactory grade or exhibit improper conduct, poor attendance, or unsatisfactory progress in their studies, their status may be changed to Concern, Warning, or Probation. Notification of a change in status will be sent to the student via email; private teachers will also be notified. Students who have been placed under Concern, Warning, or Probation are expected to seek the help of parent(s)/guardian(s), teachers, and administrators to improve their standing.
Criteria for Concern
- Grade
Any student who receives a grade of “B-” or below will be placed under Concern. - Absence without Notification
Students who are absent two or more times without informing the Preparatory Division office and their private teacher ahead of time will fall under Concern. - Lateness
If a student is late to their private lesson or the same class more than three times a semester, they will automatically fall under Concern. - Disrespectful or Disruptive Behavior
Any student who causes a distraction in class(es) that disrupts the flow of the learning environment and hinders other students from learning will fall under Concern. - Being Unprepared for Private Lessons and/or Classes
If any student repeatedly attends a private lesson or class without completing the given assignments, the student will be placed under Concern. - Failure to Meet Outlined Expectations
Students who fail to meet any academic, performance, or behavioral expectations clearly outlined in this handbook or by their instructors will be placed under Concern.
Criteria for Warning
- Grade
Students who receive a grade of “C” or below will be placed under Warning. - Consecutive Absences
Students who are absent on two or more consecutive Preparatory Division Saturdays will fall under immediate Warning unless a student has a serious medical condition that is verifiable by a doctor’s note and medical records or there is an exceptional circumstance that prevents them from attending Preparatory Division. - A student will fall under the Warning status if they make no reparation under the Concern status.
Criteria for Immediate Probation
- Grade
Students who receive a grade of “C-“ or below will be placed under Probation. -
Absence from Performance
Students who miss any scheduled Preparatory Division performances in which they are to perform, including their student recital, Chorus concerts, chamber music performances, and ensemble concerts will be placed under Probation. At the discretion of the faculty, the student’s grade may also be affected. - A student will fall under Probation if they make no reparation under the Warning status, and/or exhibit multiple criteria for Concern and/or Warning simultaneously.
When a student is under Concern, Warning, or Probation, they will be carefully observed by faculty and administrators. In order for the student to be removed from the status of Concern, Warning, or Probation, they must show sufficient progress in all areas. Depending on the level of improvement, the student may remain on given status for a period of time determined by the administration.
Should a student not make sufficient reparation from Concern, Warning, or Probation within the allotted time, a conference will be held with the student, parent(s)/guardian(s), studio teacher, classroom teacher(s), and/or the Preparatory Division administrators to discuss the enrollment status of the student. This may lead to dismissal of the student.
Students who demonstrate a failure to meet the attendance, behavioral, or scholastic standards (for example, repeated failures) of MAP may, at the School’s discretion, be subject to dismissal at any time.
Students on Probation during their final semester in MAP (year 4 or 5 or their senior year of high school) must show significant improvement by the end of the spring term in order to be eligible to graduate from MAP.
